The brief was to provide a working environment for the 747 for an airspace facility for Boeing. The challenge was to find a solution of designing a fabric installation and tensioning system that could be completed prior to lifting the roof into place. Openings for specially designed lifting points in the four corners of the structure where left uncovered therfore 80% of the work was completed from ground level. The entire roof was assembled in an adjoining field over 100m from its final position. This allowed the fabric to be installed at a low level making it easier, quicker and much safer. The structure was then moved using trucks on each corner to its final position where cranes lifted the roof onto four columns over 18m high. The final 20% of the project was completed once the main The final result provided the covered work area required while still maintaining the function of the adjoining hangar to operate normally. |
