Introducing the Rapid-Span-R – Weatherproof Fabric Structures for Tennis
UFS recently added the new Rapid-Span-R to its range of pre-engineered Sporthall structures. With a starting price of $150K AUD the Rapid-Span-R is a practical, economic solution to year-round, all-weather tennis for coaches and clubs Australia wide. This easy-to-erect tensioned fabric structure comes in a one-court standard design that can be replicated for any number of courts.
Constructed using a lightweight structural steel frame covered with waterproof tensioned fire retardant fabric, the Rapid-Span-R can be installed on any existing court surface and is fully relocatable.

UFS supplies Relocatable Structures as Part of Largest Infrastructure Project in VIC History
Thiess Degremont Joint Venture recently awarded UFS a $162K contract for the supply of two relocatable tensile fabric structures required for the AquaSure Victorian Desalination Project – a $3.5 billion dollar desalination plant, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the state's history.
As part of this project, UFS has been contracted to provide two relocatable fabric structures that will be erected during the construction of the specialised roofing panels.
The solution comprises the purchase of one Alu-Span AH 20m wide x 30m long aluminium structure, and a 3-month rental of the same structure, with modified gable ends and retractable curtain systems. It is expected that further structures will be required during plant construction. The UFS structures will be utilised until construction is complete, providing protection to the panels and minimising degeneration caused by weather.
When complete, the plant will be capable of supplying up to 150 billion litres of drinking water each year. Desalinated water is expected to be ready and delivered by the end of December 2011.
UFS Awarded Contract as part of Major Soil Remediation Project in Auckland, NZ
Universal Fabric Structures was recently selected by Mainzeal Property & Construction Pty Ltd for the hire of a 2,600m2 fabric structure as part of a large soil remediation project in downtown Auckland.
The project is the first stage of the Victoria Park Tunnel (VPT) development which has been initiated to reduce traffic congestion through Victoria Park Viaduct and St Mary's Bay (Auckland). In order to complete this major infrastructure development, the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) has acquired a portion of land from Auckland's historic Victory Christian Church (VCC).
The infrastructure on the acquired land, including a car parking building, administration building, children's ministry areas and other meeting areas, will be reconstructed on the new site.
NZTA awarded Mainzeal the contract for Stage 1 of this development which involves piling, ground testing and removal of contaminated soil in preparation for the development of the new car parking building.
A temporary, fully sealed structure was required to contain the contaminated soil during the remediation project. Mainzeal selected the Alu-Span TFS 40m wide x 65m long aluminium structure with Ferrari PVC blockout fabric, customised with personnel and vehicle access roller doors as well as a custom curtain solution to separate the working area contained within the structure.
Remediation works, which commenced in January 2010, are expected to be completed by September 2011. The Alu-Span structure was installed in late September for a two month period. Plans are for the structure to be reused for upcoming events in the Auckland area.

Project News and Updates
“Saving Waitakere over $1.3M”
UFS clients Netball Waitakere recently opened the latest UFS Sporthall at the Te Pai Centre, in Auckland, New Zealand.
The Te Pai Centre opening ceremonies were attended by hundreds of Netball Waitakere members, council members, trust members who funded the projects, as well as notable politicians including the Honourable John Banks, Mayor of Auckland and mayors from thee other major surrounding cities.
The 2400m2 Sporthall was part of a $7M development of the Te Pai Netball Courts in Henderson, Auckland. Project Management firm N-Compass awarded the design and construct of the tension fabric structure to Universal Fabric Structures in September 2009 in conjunction with NZ partners, Fabric Shelter Systems (FSS). The 36.5m wide x 60m long pre-engineered structure is designed as a structural steel curved frame assembly with a two chord lace 600m deep truss. The preferred fabric cladding was chosen as premium Ferrari 902s PVC membrane.
During the ceremony N-compass project manager Suresh Nagaiya noted, “The selection of a fabric structure over a conventional structure has saved Waitakere City over $1.3M”.
The facility will be home to the 610 Winter League, and 165 Summer League netball teams in the West Auckland and Waitakere region. With almost 10,000 members, this new development is a key part of the community development of Waitakere and is expected to provide a model for similar structures around New Zealand.
The Te Pai Centre forms part of Universal Fabric Structures’ strategy to develop many more state-of-the-art fabric covered Sporthalls for cities throughout New Zealand, Australia, and ultimately worldwide.
